Meet the Neighborhood Connectors - Kate

In March 2016, Kate Kananura joined the CTC team as the new Neighborhood Connector for the Us Making it Happen in Southeast Memphis Shalom Zone. Here, Kate tells us a little about herself and what she's learned in her time as a Neighborhood Connector.

Can you tell me a little about yourself? Where are you from? What brought you to Memphis?

I am originally from Uganda and I have lived in Tennessee for almost nine years. My family and I lived in Jackson TN for a couple of years and moved to Memphis due to a new job offer to my husband. It was also an opportunity for me to attend graduate school at University of Memphis.

What are some things you like to do in your free time?

I am family-oriented, so I like spending quality time with them and our family friends. I am also an active member of my church and I participate in a number of community outreach activities there.

What can you tell me about the Southeast Memphis/Hickory Hill neighborhood?

Southeast Memphis is a great neighborhood that is highly characterized by diversity. The neighborhood attracts people from various cultures, backgrounds and age groups. With this comes new approaches and new ways of thinking towards community building. Hickory Hill is on its way to becoming the strong and thriving neighborhood many residents dream about.

What is it like being a Neighborhood Connector in Southeast Memphis/Hickory Hill?

Every single day is exciting! I meet new people with different aspirations, passions, amazing gifts and skills. I also get to discover the abundant assets that this community is blessed with. My role is to connect these people to each other and to the resources in the neighborhood. I am enjoying every bit of it!

What is one thing that you've learned in your time as a Neighborhood Connector?

To listen and learn.

You can watch a video of Kate discussing her role as a Neighborhood Connector here.
