Meet the Neighborhood Connectors - Meet Ashley

In March 2016, Ashley Black joined the CTC team as the new South Memphis Neighborhood Connector. Here, Ashley tells us a little about herself and her connections to South Memphis.

Can you tell us a little about yourself? Where are you from?

Well, I'm a Memphian. I grew up in the Binghampton and Mitchell Heights area, but many of my family are from South Memphis and I attend church there, at Greater New Salem Missionary Baptist Church.

I attended East High School as a honors student in the engineering optional program. While there I participated in a lot of things, including engineering, marching band, student council, and the National Honor Society. After high school, I gained a bachelors degree in business administration from Middle Tennessee State University. While there I had the grand opportunity to become a member of Alpha Kappa Psi business fraternity.

What are some things you like to do in your free time?

I like to watch movies, spend time with my family, and listen to live bands.

What can you tell me about the South Memphis neighborhood?

The South Memphis neighborhood is one of unity where everyone helps those that are willing to be helped. It's also a neighborhood that takes pride in its rich history.

What's it like being the Neighborhood Connector is South Memphis?

It's an honor to be the Neighborhood Connector for South Memphis. South Memphis is a very tight nit community. They don't let everyone in. Once you have gained the neighbors' trust, though, they support you full force. I have come across some genuine people that love deeply.

What is one thing you've learned in your time as a Neighborhood Connector?

I have learned the true meaning of "listen twice and speak once". Allow the owner of the story to tell their story. I've also learned that there is still so much hope for South Memphis.
